TransUnion Bankruptcy Reporting Class Action Settlement
What Is the TransUnion Bankruptcy Reporting Settlement About?
Plaintiff William Norman Brooks III alleges that TransUnion sold reports with bankruptcy notations on individual credit accounts even though their public-record sections contained no bankruptcy filing. He contends that reporting those remarks was inaccurate when there was no government-held bankruptcy record within the preceding ten years.
The lawsuit alleges violations of the Fair Credit Reporting Act’s reasonable-procedures requirement. TransUnion denies wrongdoing. The settlement resolves disputed claims without a trial decision on liability.
How Much Is the TransUnion Settlement Payout?
Your potential payment depends on your assigned group and whether you submit a valid claim:
- No Bankruptcy Group: members who remain in the settlement receive $100 automatically. Filing a valid claim permits an additional, higher payment; the official notice estimates approximately $1,000 for members of this group who file valid claims.
- Aged Bankruptcy Group: a valid claim is required. The estimated payment is approximately $350. Doing nothing produces no payment for this group.
Estimates may change with valid claims and available funds after approved deductions; no fixed combined payout is promised. Payments follow final approval and appeals, by check unless an offered electronic method is selected.
Am I Eligible to File a Claim?
You may qualify if you resided in the United States or its territories and a TransUnion report sold to a third party between January 6, 2020, and January 31, 2023, included a bankruptcy remark on a credit account but no bankruptcy record in that report’s public-record section. There must also be no government-held record of your bankruptcy filing in the preceding ten years.
For a claim-based payment, certify the specified bankruptcy history and at least one listed harm: a credit-score decrease caused by the bankruptcy information, or a credit denial for which it was one reason.
Is the TransUnion Bankruptcy Reporting Settlement Legit?
Yes. Judge Karen Spencer Marston of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania oversees Brooks v. Trans Union LLC. The authorized site provides the agreement, notice and claim form. Continental DataLogix administers claims. Final approval remains pending as of September 24, 2026.
When’s the Claim Deadline?
Submit online or mail a completed claim postmarked by October 30, 2026. Exclusions and objections share that deadline but follow separate notice procedures. The final approval hearing is scheduled for December 2, 2026, at 10 a.m. Eastern.
Who Qualifies for the TransUnion Settlement?
The No Bankruptcy Group consists of members for whom searches using Social Security numbers found no locatable bankruptcy filing. The Aged Bankruptcy Group includes members whose only located filings were more than ten years before the report date. The administrator has identified approximately 57,000 potential members across both groups.
An ordinary credit-report error does not establish membership. Check your group using your notice credentials, or contact the administrator.
