TED Video Privacy Class Action Settlement

What Is the TED Video Privacy Settlement About?

The lawsuit alleges that TED disclosed information identifying users and their video viewing to Leanplum, Mixpanel and OpenWeb in violation of the federal Video Privacy Protection Act. TED disputes the allegations, maintains that transmitted information was encoded or encrypted, and argues that its use of the software was permitted for ordinary business operations. The court has not decided liability.

The agreement also calls for changes involving user consent and the transmission or storage of certain account information.

How Much Is the TED Settlement Payout?

Eligible class members have three alternative benefit choices:

  • Two free months of TED Membership, estimated to be worth at least $10. An activation link will be provided automatically, but the recipient must activate the benefit.
  • A cash payment of up to $5. Valid cash payments may be reduced proportionately if necessary to stay within the $350,000 cash-benefit cap.
  • Donation of the claimant’s cash entitlement back to TED Foundation Inc.

Choosing cash or a donation replaces the membership benefit. The $350,000 cap applies to cash claims; it does not describe the entire value of the settlement. The donation election also leaves the claimant bound by the settlement.

Am I Eligible to File a Claim?

You may qualify if all of the following apply:

  • You were a TED account holder in the United States.
  • You watched a prerecorded video through TED.com or TED’s iOS or Android app between October 19, 2021, and July 14, 2026.
  • You have not validly excluded yourself and are not otherwise excluded under the agreement.

A qualifying account and viewing activity are required. Watching a TED video elsewhere, without meeting the account and platform requirements, does not by itself establish eligibility.

Is the TED Video Privacy Settlement Legit?

Yes. Judge Dale E. Ho of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York oversees the case. The court appointed Fidexis, LLC to administer the settlement and authorized notice to class members. The official website provides the agreement, notice and court materials. Final approval remains pending.

When’s the Claim Deadline?

Submit a cash or donation election online by October 26, 2026, at 11:59 p.m., or mail a completed claim postmarked by that date. The membership benefit does not require a cash claim, but does require activation when the link arrives.

The final approval hearing is scheduled for November 12, 2026. Benefits will be distributed after final approval and resolution of any appeals, according to the settlement’s distribution schedule.

Who Qualifies for the TED Settlement?

The nationwide class includes qualifying account holders who used the covered website or mobile apps during the stated period. The agreement excludes the presiding judges and their families, specified TED-related entities and personnel, and their legal representatives, successors or assigns. The administrator determines whether a submitted claim satisfies the settlement requirements.

How Do I File a TED Settlement Claim Form?

Visit the official website and enter the eight-digit Claim ID and four-digit PIN from your notice. Each Claim ID supports one claim. If your notice is missing, contact Fidexis for assistance.

Complete the requested account and contact information, select cash or donation, and sign the eligibility certification. Cash can be delivered by check, PayPal or Venmo. Retain your confirmation. For a mailed claim, obtain the paper form through the administrator and send it to the listed Albany address before the deadline.
